BLAINE – Wendell F. Pierce, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Blaine on February 8, 2016. He was born in Blaine, the son of C. Hume and Madeline Pierce.
Wendell was probably best well known as the owner and developer of the Big Rock Ski Area and the Mars Hill Wind Farm. An innovative entrepreneur, he ran with a vision and provided a lifetime of recreation for the enjoyment of area families. Early in his career, Wendell tried his hand at farming and later went to work for Sears and Roebuck in Presque Isle where he worked 25 years. His time at Sears led to many lasting friendships. As a land developer, Wendell was an honorary member of the International Appalachian Trail Club. Wendell was proud of his civic contributions and participated in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was a 65 year member of the Masons and a Shriner.
Gramp/Dad was much loved by his family and the richness of experience he brought to all of our lives will be missed.
Predeceased by wife of 65 years, B. Marie; son, Gary; both parents, Madeline and Hume Pierce; two brothers, Sylvanus and Franklin.
He leaves three daughters, Sue Dearborn and her husband, Dwayne of Virginia, Joy Towle and her husband, Earle of Fryeburg, ME, and Gayle Pierce of Anchorage, AK. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren, Janice Jewett, Kevin Kearney, Jonathan Pierce, Travis Kearney, Nicholas Patterson, Erin Pierce, Anne Caballero, Daniel Patterson, Marina Brakeman, Joshua Hersom, Jeremy Hersom and Megan Patterson. He was fortunate to have met his 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Friends called 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2016, at Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill, where a Masonic service was held at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, at the funeral home with Pastor Lawrence Beals, officiating. Spring interment will be held at Kings Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wendell’s memory to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N.
