Young hockey players excel in tourney

The Westerdahl’s Novice Jr. Black Hawk team attended their first tournament the weekend of Feb. 6-7, 2016 in Perth Andover, New Brunswick.

“It was a little daunting at first, as the players had only played in one full-ice game up until then,” coach Ellie Hagerman said. “They started off well, but did suffer two losses.”

The young Black hawks lost 5-4 in their first game and 5-3 in the second contest, showing improvement each game. The squad won its final game with a 4-2 victory over Presque Isle.

“I was so pleased with the team this past weekend,” Hagerman said. “They came together as a team. They skated hard and never gave up. They learned to spread out and help each other out. They started to get the hang of off sides and icing. At the end they were getting in front of the net and the defense did great holding the blue line. They even had fun showing off their dance moves to loosen up.

“They will be a strong team with a little more games under their belt. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” she added.
