Local libraries were the recent recipients of copies of the Town of Chapman’s newly published centennial history, “Celebrating 100 Years of Community.”

The published volume is the result of work by Chapman residents who wanted to preserve and collate oral and written town history in honor of the centennial year and also for future research.
A gathering was held at the Mapleton Elementary School in early February to distribute the books. Recipients are the Mapleton Elementary School library, the Mark and Emily Turner Library in Presque Isle, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle library, which has an Aroostook collection among its holdings.
Representatives from the three institutions were in Mapleton to accept their books.
“This little book was the perfect conclusion to our centennial year,” said Patricia Sutherland, Chapman select board chair and member of the centennial committee. “We realized early on that much of our oral history was being lost and written notes by earlier residents were in danger of being lost as well, so we decided to assemble what we referred to as a compilation of interviews, essays, trivia, history and more and created our book.”
Sutherland continued, “We’re very proud of what our little group produced.”
Chapman centennial committee members were Sue Maynard, Joyce Pendexter, Leah Buck, Pam McEachern, Mapleton/Castle Hill/Chapman Town Manager Jon Frederick and Sutherland.
Four Chapman children who attend the Mapleton school, Thomas Langille, Drake Boucher, Denver Miller and Mason Ireland, joined their principal, Dan Duprey, to accept the volume for the local school’s library. Mason’s little brother Jaxson is Chapman’s centennial baby, and Mason was pleased to see his picture in the book with his whole family. The children were very proud and excited to represent their school.
Also participating were Martin Puckett, Presque Isle city manager, for the Turner library; Frederick; and Roger Getz, UMPI director of library services.
