According to Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna, Justin Hulbert, 24, of Houlton reportedly shot himself accidentally with a new handgun while he was showing the weapon to friends. Police responded to 6 Prospect St. to follow up on a 9-1-1 hang-up call when they discovered the shooting incident had taken place.
Hulbert was not at the residence when police arrived. Instead, he had been taken to the Houlton Regional Hospital by a private vehicle and later transported via ambulance to the airport in Presque Isle, where he was flown to the Bangor hospital.
McKenna stated the bullet had gone through Hulbert’s hand and entered into his leg, near the knee, and exited out the opposite side into his calf. Hulbert was still at the Bangor hospital Monday afternoon in serious condition.
No charges are pending in the case, the chief said.
