FOLSOM, Norma, 87, Feb. 16, 2016. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Longfellow Cemetery in Machias.
SEVERNA PARK, MD — Norma Folsom, 87, died February 16, in surrounded by her family. She had been visiting her daughter, Kathy, for the holidays. Norma was born July 3, 1928, in Machias, Maine, to Mary Katherine (McDonald) and Emerson MacLauchlan.
She graduated from Machias High School in 1945 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Maine and Eastern Maine School of Nursing in 1950.
At the University of Maine, she met Garth Folsom and after marrying him moved to Monticello where she lived the rest of her life. She raised two children, Kathy and Kim, which was her primary early career. She worked at the Aroostook Hospital in Houlton and did private-duty nursing. In 1968, she started working in Child Protective Services for the Maine Department of Human Services, where she eventually became the regional manager of Adult Protective Services. Following her retirement in 1997, she spent time visiting her extended family and caring for her father.
She was very active in the Monticello Methodist Church serving on many committees, her favorite being the after-school program for the children of Monticello. She was a trustee of the Houlton Regional Hospital for 10 years.
Most days, rain or shine, she could be seen walking her three miles on the Station Road in Monticello and then enjoying her grilled fish sandwich (no mayo) at the Blue Moose.
Norma is survived by her daughter Katherine, (Roger) Schaffer of Severna Park, MD, her son, Kim (Lorna) Folsom of Idaho Falls, ID, and her brother Donald (Sherry) MacLauchlan. She is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and her dear friend Heidi Watson. She was predeceased by her husband Garth.
She asked that friends perform an act of kindness in her memory. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Longfellow Cemetery in Machias, Maine.
