Limestone man accused of driving under influence

CARIBOU, Maine — A Limestone man was arrested earlier this month after a Caribou police officer said he saw the driver speeding in the wrong direction in a roundabout intersection in the city.

Daniel Moutinho, 30, was charged with operating under the influence with one prior conviction and violation of conditions of release.

Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan said in a written statement Feb. 9 that the department was prompted to investigate after receiving a complaint about an apparently intoxicated driver on High Street.

Officer Douglas Bell allegedly spotted Moutinho driving a tan four-door car on the wrong side of the road at a very high rate of speed.

The driver turned north onto Van Buren Road from Bennett Drive, Gahagan said, still proceeding in the wrong lane and going significantly over the posted speed limit. The vehicle allegedly entered the roundabout intersection going the wrong way and struck a light pole and then a utility pole, finally coming to rest in a ditch and some trees.

Moutinho was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton with bail set at $500 cash or $2,500 surety.

At the time of the arrest, Moutinho was out on three different bails, according to Gahagan. He did not indicate what charges led to the previous bail conditions.

Moutinho’s arraignment date is scheduled for April 7.
