The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery
Ron Chase, author of “The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery” will be at the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library for a presentation and book signing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. We hope to have some books available for purchase during this event, but it may be better if you purchase one through Amazon before the event.
The topic of many a conversation from Nov. 12, 1971 until his capture a few months later, this book has introduced Bernard Patterson to an entire new group of town folk that weren’t around at the time. The book is a great read and tells of the planning that took place as well as some of the misadventures following the actual robbery.
Dr. Seuss’s birthday to be celebrated at library
A special birthday party celebrating Dr. Seuss will be held at the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library on Wednesday, March 2 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Story time will start at 6 p.m. Plan to stop by for a fun time!
A “buy back” program is being started at the library. Have you bought a great book lately and wonder what to do with it now? Why not donate it to the library and share the story and possibly recoup some of your investment? The program is for specific current hardcover books. For more details, visit the library or our website at wtahansenlibrary.org.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Feb. 16 and the special speaker was Lt. Brian Harris of Maine State Police Troop F. He spoke about the administrative work he is doing as head of Troop F. The unit is currently short a few people. The recruitment of new troopers is an issue as there are lots of options for individuals completing training from state police, county sheriffs or federal jobs with the Border Patrol and Customs.
Academy classes are held twice a year. The local troopers work with UMPI and their Criminal Justice Classes. The State Police have a variety of options for troopers after they have spent a few years on road patrols. There are dive teams, detective squads and truck weights and inspections.
Many problems they deal with can be traced back to drug and alcohol abuse from burglary, child abuse and domestic violence.
Harris points out that state troopers in Troop F work hard to cover a vast amount of area in Aroostook County. They don’t spend all their time sitting around drinking coffee and eating “power rings” — their name for those round pastries with a hole in the middle!

The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill is hosting Bingo on Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. at the Post. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening with friends!
