Nunez pitches Owls to lone win during trip
The UMPI baseball team was able to salvage one victory during its six-game road trip last week.
The Owls used a complete-game five-hitter by sophomore Saul Nunez of Mapleton to defeat The Apprentice School, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader played Thursday in Hampton, Va.
Nunez struck out four batters and walked only three to earn the pitching win. Brady Rowe walked to open the game and moved to third on Matt Cauchon’s single. Both scored later in the inning for the only runs UMPI needed.
The Apprentice School scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Nunez recorded a strikeout with the tying run on third base to end the contest.
UMPI was beaten in the first game of the twinbill, 24-5. Matt Curry, a sophomore from Caribou, had two hits and two RBIs for the Owls.
The trip began with UMPI being swept by William Peace, 6-0 and 3-2 in eight innings, in Cary, N.C. last Wednesday.
In the extra-inning loss, Curry went seven innings and allowed just one earned run, while Tyler McLaughlin came on in the eighth and surrendered the game-winner. Jacob Powell’s RBI single in the first inning capped a two-run rally that put UMPI on top.
On Friday, UMPI was beaten by Mary Washington by scores of 8-2 and 15-0.
