PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — For most people, the last day to enroll in a 2016 Marketplace health insurance plan was Jan. 31. In some cases, however, a special enrollment period may be available based on certain life changes, like having a baby, getting married or losing health coverage.
“Health insurance plans in the Marketplace can be very affordable,” explained Dawn Roberts, health care navigator/community education specialist at the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP).
“A family of two can make up to $63,720 and still receive a premium tax credit to help pay insurance premiums,” Roberts said. “Over 78,000 Maine residents enrolled or re-enrolled in a plan this year.”
ACAP is part of the Community Action Navigator Consortium and is a partner in a statewide network of certified Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators. Navigators can provide free in-person assistance to help consumers apply for and enroll in coverage through the marketplace. ACAP is not affiliated with any insurance company.
Roberts said navigators can help participants understand their options and access programs that could lower their monthly health premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Private information is protected and we will never be shared with anybody.
Those who don’t have qualifying health coverage in 2016 will need to pay a fee of $695 per adult, up to $2085, or 2.5 percent of household income, whichever is higher.
