TEAMWORK PAYS  — Houlton Police Sgt. Lynn Foster is joined by his canine counterpart, Shadow, on the steps of Houlton Superior Court.

100 Years Ago – Mar. 1, 1916

 Vaudeville performer —Thos. Towle, who has been connected with the Dream Theatre as a trap drummer and vaudeville performer since the theatre was opened, closed his engagement on Saturday evening.

 Treasurer — Robert M. Lawlis announced his candidacy for the position of Town Treasurer, the office now held by Olin M. Smith. Mr. Lawlis is a Houlton boy and is one of Houlton’s brightest lawyers and promising young men.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 27, 1941

 Gathering — Houlton was flooded with members of the Masonic Fraternity Saturday afternoon and evening when Mystic Lodge No. 65 of Hampden made its Washington’s Birthday pilgrimage to Monument Lodge No. 96 of Houlton. Nearly 1,000 Masons observed the event and it was the largest gathering of its kind in Maine.

 Sendoff — Houlton turned out en masse Monday morning to give a rousing sendoff to the 78 men of Headquarters Battery, First Battalion, 152nd Field Artillery as they left by special train for Bangor and thence to Camp Blanding, Fla., where they will undergo intensive training as a part of the nation’s stepped-up national defense program. It was a rousing sendoff reminiscent of 1917, but there were many who felt lumps come in their throats.

50 Years Ago – Mar. 3, 1966

 A move up — A Houlton man has been named to the number-two post in the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad’s Transportation Department. The appointment of Robert P. Groves, 39, as assistant superintendent of transportation was announced by H.P. Lee, superintendent transportation for the road. Mr. Lee also announced the appointment of Patrick A. Carroll as assistant chief dispatcher.

 55 years — Mr. and Mrs. Randall Webber of Houlton observed their 55th anniversary on Feb. 22 with a dinner party at the Northland Hotel. The small group included Dr. and Mrs. John Webber of Belfast and Mrs. Louise Kellogg.

25 Years Ago – Feb. 27, 1991

 Raising funds — Students at Lambert School joined forces and decided under the guidance of John Bushey, teacher, to raise money to help those in need. Working on the endeavor were Ryan Merritt, who raised $100; Jodi Plourde, who raised $50; and Jennifer Bell, $20; along with Justin Edgar, Mary Mersereau, Kathy McLaughlin, Erin Thomas, Sara Tonzi, Kristen Erickson and Tyson Cumming.

 Business sold — McGillicuddy Furniture, owned by Paul. A. McGillicuddy for the past 30 years, has been sold to Fred London of Hodgdon. The furniture business under London will continue to offer the same quality lines including Lane, Sealey, Bassett, Gibson, Sylvania, to name a few. The name of McGillicuddy’s Furniture will remain and Paul will be looking forward to customers dropping in to “chat for a while.”
