HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre will present its annual production on the first weekend of April. This year’s play is “The Reluctant Dragon”, based on the classic Kenneth Grahame story.

“The Reluctant Dragon”, is the tale of Mortimer the harmless dragon who must defend himself against Saint George, who has been summoned by the king to protect the villagers of his kingdom, to slay what they think is a vicious monster. With some help from his new friends Widget and Hairytoes, Mortimer eventually finds a way to meet the challenge with the dragon slayer.

The play is being directed by Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre board members Gary Farnham and Ann Barnes and features a cast of third, fourth and fifth grade students. As with all Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre productions, students are also contributing in technical roles and with the creation of sets and props.

The play will be presented to the public on Friday April 1st at 6:30pm and Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. at the Houlton Community Arts Center at Houlton High School. Tickets will be available at the door. Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors, $3 for children under 12 and $15 for a family of four or more.

The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre is also planning to produce a radio play later this spring, in conjunction with WHOU FM, which will feature performances by junior high and high school students.

The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre, founded in 1969 by students at Ricker College, is one of the oldest community children’s theatres in the country and offers live theater for and by children to the greater Houlton area. The Theatre is a non-profit organization supported by generous volunteer help and community donations.
