“Caribou ahead as usual” — According to figures given out at the office of the state superintendent of schools Tuesday, there are 19,420 pupils registered in the common schools of Aroostook County with 9,659 boys and 9,761 girls. Caribou registers 1,353 pupils with 1,026 the average daily attendance. Caribou had the most pupils, followed by Presque Isle at 1,270 and Fort Kent at 1,204.
Special trip — A special car will run from New Sweden to Presque Isle for the Chapman Concert, Wednesday, March 15, leaving New Sweden at 7:00. The artists will be America’s best male quartet, the “Criterian” and Miss Florence Austin, one of America’s foremost violinists and Prof. Chapman, the pianist.
75 Years Ago — Mar. 6, 1941
Successful season — Caribou High School’s varsity basketball team, which completed one of its most successful seasons in recent years under the able coach of Charles Caddoo, assisted by Philip Mealey, won 13 of its 18-game schedule, finishing second in the Aroostook League.
Auto fatalities decrease — Aroostook County showed a marked decrease in automobile fatalities for the first two months of this year compared with the same period of last year. In 1940 for January and February, seven fatalities occurred while but two are listed for this year, according to a report issued by the Chief of the Maine State Police.
50 Years Ago — Mar. 9, 1966
Re-zoning — A valuable new commercial area has been made available to the town following the approval of Town Council of the rezoning of land opposite Sam’s Toyland on South Main Street for commercial use, according to town manager Charles Hatch. Adding to the value of the new land is the fact that sewer lines were laid last year all the way to the Bishop Motel. A new high pressure water line is also under construction across from the motel. Caribou Water Works expects to have a new standpipe completed in that area around May 1.
Elbow Room — Hotel Caribou’s Elbow Room has been recently remodeled complete with expanded Ethan Allen furniture throughout, and of course, plenty of free parking.
25 Years Ago —Mar. 6, 1991
May groundbreaking slated — John Capenos of Oneida Ontario Co. Inc. addressed more than 200 audience members Feb. 25 concerning updates in development plans for the 516,000 square-foot Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle. Capenos displayed blueprints and artist sketches of the $35.7 million Maysville Street project. Construction will begin between May 1 and May 15, he said.
Teacher of the year candidate — Frank McElwain, grade 7-12 agriculture teacher at Limestone Junior-Senior High School, is one of 10 semi-finalists for the 1992 Maine Teacher of the Year. Three finalists will be selected by mid-September, and the winner will be named in early October, according to Maine Department of Education Commissioner, Eve Bither.
