HAPPY HATTERS — Elementary students don creative hats of their own style to begin a week of events Monday at St. Mary’s School celebrating Catholic Schools Week. 100 Years Ago – March 8, 1916

 Foundation — Mr. J.M. VanTasel, concrete engineer of Houlton, has just completed the foundation for the Mattawamkeag Lumber Co’s. new mill to be built at Island Falls.

 Ball a success — The Leap Year Ball, in Monticello, given by the ladies in the Hall on Friday night, was a decided success. Music was by the Monticello orchestra, with Mr. Wilson of Houlton playing the violin in place of Miss McLeod, who was on the sick list.

 

75 Years Ago – March 6, 1941

 Hoopsters The Houlton High School’s girl’s basketball team completed a very successful season, winning its third championship of the Aroostook League in four years. Coach Charles W. Wood, who has guided the teams since the season of 1930-31, was given much of the credit for an outstanding record. Two cups had been retired by his teams during this period, but, more importantly, his teams had won Aroostook League top honors six years and have finished as runner-up three times.

 Pattern maker — Fred Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Sevens of this town, has completed his course in pattern making at the Worcester Trade School of Worcester, Mass. Stevens finished the 4,000-hour course in 3,000 hours, and has accepted a position as pattern maker with Morgan Industries of Worcester.

 

50 Years Ago – March 17, 1966

 Crowned — Rita Zimmer, 1965 Snowball Weekend Queen, presented crowns to new king Mike Lewis of Rockfall, Conn., and new queen Barbara Reed of Houlton, at the formal ball Saturday night at Ricker Commons.

 Award winner — Miss Sharon I. Hughes, winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award for Houlton High School, was presented with her award by Principal J. Rodney Coffin. She was eligible for state and national awards ranging from $300 to $5,000.

 

25 Years Ago – March 6, 1991

 New book — Glenna Wotton Atwood, a Monticello native, had recently written a book entitled “Living Well with Parkinson’s.” She was qualified to write on this subject, as she learned 10 years prior that she had Parkinson’s disease. She made herself available to groups wanting her perspective on dealing with chronic illness.

 Years of service — In recognition of two employees who gave 30 years of service to the AE Staley Manufacturing Company, managers James A. Lawson and William D. Dunn presented them with 30-year awards from the company. Charles D. Smart received a belt buckle and Darrell V. Tidd received a clock.
