BARNES, Dana W., 74, FORT FAIRFIELD, March 1, 2016. Spring interment with Masonic Burial Rites will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Arrangements are under the care of Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
FORT FAIRFIELD — Dana W. “Barney” Barnes, 74, husband of Carol P. (Dionne) Barnes, passed away Tuesday morning March 1, 2016 at his Fort Fairfield home surrounded by
his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born May 5, 1941 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Ronald E. and Ruth E. (Foss) Barnes. Dana was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1959, attended M.C.I., Pittsfield and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Maine at Orono in Agricultural Sciences. He served in the Maine National Guard and was married to Carol P. Dionne on March 26, 1966. Early in his career, Dana had been employed by the Farmers Home Administration in Rutland, Vermont, however he spent most of his career as an Agway potato farmer in Fort Fairfield until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the former Frontier Masonic Lodge, Fort Fairfield, and was currently affiliated with the Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 130 AF & AM, Presque Isle, the Anna Temple Shrine, past president of the Fort Fairfield Rotary Club, past treasurer of the Fort Fairfield Fish and Game Club, past president of the Fort Fairfield Development Committee, a member of the Atlantic Salmon for Northern Maine, and Phi Eta Kappa Fraternity of U.M.O..
He was predeceased by his father, Ronald E. Barnes; one sister, Brenda L. Findlen; and is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Carol P. Barnes of Fort Fairfield; his mother, Ruth E. Barnes of Presque Isle; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Megan Barnes of Fort Fairfield; three daughters, Tracy Barnes and her fiancé Bill Akeley, Sharon Churchill and her husband, Jerry, all of Fort Fairfield, Kristen DeBrosky and her husband, Joe of Rockport; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Kathy Barnes, Jason and Deborah Barnes, all of Fort Fairfield; 12 grandchildren, Olivia Barnes of Caribou, Connor Churchill, Kara and Nathan Barnes, Emily Giggey, all of Fort Fairfield, Seth and Brady Roy of Presque Isle, Brandon, Isabelle and Mia DeBrosky, all of Rockport, Brandon Akeley of Medford, MA, Mirandah Akeley of Portland; one great-grandson, Jaxen Barnes of Caribou; several nieces and nephews. Dana also leaves behind two brothers-in-law, Jerry Findlen of Clinton, and Leslie Dionne of Pace, FL; as well as a special cousin, Joe Barnes of Veazie; and special friends, David and Nancy Dorsey, of Fort Fairfield.
Friends called Saturday, March 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Celebration Center, 170 Houlton Road, Fort Fairfield where a service to Celebrate Dana’s Life was conducted at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Brent Churchill officiating. Spring interment with Masonic Burial Rites will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately following the service. Those who wish may contribute in Mr. Barnes memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114. Envelopes will be available at the service.
