Maryland man injured in Masardis snowsled crash
MASARDIS, Maine — A Maryland man suffered a possible compound leg fracture Monday after the snowmobile he was driving struck a tractor-trailer on Route 11 in Masardis.
Maine State Police Sgt. Jeff Clark said in a written statement that the crash occurred just before 12:45 p.m. when a 2007 Freightliner log truck driven by Timothy Brown, 49, of Presque Isle was northbound on the roadway.
Brown said that he first saw a snowmobile cross the roadway in front of him at a high rate of speed, and then as he was approaching the trail another snowmobile came out and attempted to cross Route 11. At that time, the 2004 Ski-Doo driven by Jeremy Allen, 35, of Huntingtown, Maryland, struck the side of the tractor-trailer, and the front of the snowmobile traveled under the truck, according to Clark.
The snowmobile was torn in half by the impact.
Allen told police it was his third day of snowmobiling ever, according to Clark, and he was traveling with three other snowmobiles in a group as the second snowmobiler.
According to Clark, Allen missed a stop sign on the trail, did not have time to stop, and slid out into the road and struck the tractor-trailer right in front of its driver’s side rear wheels.
Visibility was not an issue, according to Clark.
The driver of the snowmobile in front of Allen was not injured.
Allen was wearing a helmet and Brown was wearing his seat belt. Allen was taken by Ashland Ambulance Department to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. The Ashland Police Department, the Maine Warden Service and Maine Forest Service assisted at the scene.
Trooper Adam Stoutamyer assisted at the scene.
