100 Years Ago – March 15, 1916
Senate — Hon. Ira G. Hersey, president of the Maine Senate, opened his campaign for United States senator in Milo. He spoke to a large and representative audience, not only of townspeople, but of prominent Republicans from all over that section.
Tuning — Mr. C. W. Basford, the piano tuner, was in town and any orders could be left at the music stores.
75 Years Ago – March 13, 1941
Army promotion — Robert Spalding, former resident of Houlton and photographer for the Pioneer Times, was promoted from the grade of private to private first class, specialist sixth class. Spalding is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Spalding.
Royalty — The Burleigh School in Linneus held its Winter Carnival coronation Friday evening, when Marion Adams was crowned Queen and Darrell Bates became King. Gloria Little performed the ceremony of the coronation.
50 Years Ago – March 17, 1966
Check for heart fund — Mrs. Harold Cassidy accepted a check for $107 from Boy Scout Troop 166, representing the sum the troop collected for the Heart Fund on tag day. Mrs. Cassidy received the check from Gerry DeLong, who personally collected $32.21 during the tag day. The tag day was the third the troop has conducted on behalf of the annual Heart Fund campaigns in Houlton, and was the most successful.
Dean’s list — Timothy Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lane, a junior student at Yale University, was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester.
25 Years Ago – March 13, 1991
Welcome home — More than 500 Loring Air Force troops returned home from the Persian Gulf War Sunday as thousands of relatives, friends and well-wishers turned out for the homecoming. Mary Suitter of Houlton and Jack McGaughey of Island Falls waved the colors, rang the bell and shook the tambourine as they joined in festivities at Loring Air Base welcoming Desert Storm troops home.
Fund-raiser — David McGillicuddy, SAD 29 junior and senior high school band director, worked with students Jessica Bannard and Angela Powers on a fund-raiser spaghetti supper at the school to benefit 36 band students who were to travel to Toronto during April vacation.
