PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Himie Towle Memorial Ski Dag was held March 5 at the Nordic Heritage Center and Russell Currier of the Snowy Mountain Ski Club and Hilary Saucy of the Nordic Heritage Sports Club were the overall men’s and women’s champions in the 10-kilometer race.
Currier, a Stockholm native, Caribou High School graduate and 2014 Olympian in the biathlon, finished the 10K distance in 19 minutes and 21 seconds. Saucy, an UMPI student from Harleysville, Pa., had a time of 23:34 and was fifth overall out of 24 races in the long-distance event.
Joey Bard was the men’s runner-up in 21:48, with Matthew Forshey third in 21:57 and Connor Hrynuk fourth in 21:58.
Lydia Streinz was second to Saucy in the women’s competition and sixth overall in 23:43.
Two skiers from the 10th Mountain Ski Club in Fort Kent competed, with Jeff Dubis seventh overall in 24:42 and Sherry Dubis 14th in 29:51.
Fourteen-year-old Andrew Luiker of the Wostawea Ski Club in Fredericton, New Brunswick won the 5K race in 13:49. The runner-up was Tom Towle of Fort Fairfield and the NHSC with a time of 15:54. Robert Morimanno of Wostawea took third in 15:58.
The women’s 5K champ was Sarah Zuidhof of Wostawea in 18:36 and the second-place female was Wostawea’s Sylvette Fortin in 23:48. Thirteen skiers competed in the 5K.
In the kids’ race, Asher and Tianna Zuidhof, both of Wostawea, were the winners. The seven-year-old Asher finished in 45 seconds and nine-year-old Tianna in 1:15. Samantha Andersen claimed the third spot as the seven-year-old recorded a 1:28 clocking. Sixteen children, all 13 years of age and younger, participated.
