Volleyball titles up for grabs

    The Aroostook League’s high school volleyball tournaments will be played this week, with girls’ and boys’ championships to be decided in two divisions.

    The Div. I girls’ tourney, for the area’s larger schools, will be played at Caribou High School this afternoon and the Div. I boys’ tournament is set for today at Presque Isle High School. Both get underway at 3:30 p.m.
    The Div. II girls’ event will be played Friday at Washburn District High School beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the Div. II boys’ tourney is slated for Saturday at Fort Fairfield High School, beginning at 9 a.m.

Worcester makes all-rookie team

    Freshman guard Kenzie Worcester of the Husson Eagles was recently named to the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Rookie Basketball Team.
    The 2015 Washburn District High School graduate led Husson in scoring with 13.8 points per game, field goal percentage (.469), field goals made (134), free throw percentage (.878), free throws made (79), assists (72), assists per game (2.6), steals (67) and steals per game (2.4). Worcester finished with 386 points.
    She is the daughter of Larry and Kim Worcester of Washburn.

Track and field clinics

    The Maine Association of USA Track and Field will conduct a track and field official’s clinic Sunday, April 3 in the Orono council chambers at the Town Office building on 59 Main St. in Orono.
    Registration begins at 11:15 a.m. and the clinic will run from noon-4 p.m.
    Anyone interested in officiating track and field at the youth, high school or collegiate level is invited to attend. Track coaches and parents of athletes who want to learn more about the rules are also encouraged to attend.

McDonald’s all-star highlights
    The C/D North girls and the AA/A/B North boys were victorious in their games played Saturday at

McDonald’s Senior All-Star weekend.

    Larry Gardner of Fort Fairfield was a coach of the winning girls’ team, which included one of his Tiger players, Kayla Giberson. Donovan Savage of Caribou was a member of the winning boys’ squad.
    Other local players competing were Noah Caron and Jarrett Olson of Washburn with the C/D boys’ team and Taylor Williams of Presque Isle on the AA/A/B girls’ team.
    Savage made 47 out of 50 free throws to take second in the boys’ state foul shooting competition, while Emily Lagerstrom of Presque Isle was the girls’ runner-up, also converting 47 free throws. The winning total was 48 for each division.

McIntyre makes All-Northeast squad

    Victoria McIntyre, a senior at Husson University, was recently named to the d3hoops.com All-Northeast Region fourth team in basketball for the 2015-16 season. She is the first Eagle player in the history of the program to be selected to the elite squad.
    The 2012 Central Aroostook High School graduate was Husson’s second-leading scorer (354 points) and top rebounder (198) this past winter. She made a team-high 48 three-point field goals. She finished her career with 1,077 points and was recently named North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year.
