102 Years Ago – March 12, 1914
Junior exhibition — The annual Junior Exhibition at Presque Isle High School was to be held in Perry Theatre Friday evening, March 20. Speakers were Misses Gladys Porter, Charlotte Reed, Dorothy Lenfest, Grace Wright, Mildred Graves, Lila Paul, Vida Sweetsir and Mildred Colwell; Isaac McGlauflin, James Carr and Harry Pierson.
Local happenings — Mrs. Ray Stewart opened her store in the Porter Block Saturday and received a large number of callers. She has a fine line of stamped goods and accessories.
75 Years Ago – March 13, 1941
Draft call — A total of 143 draftees left Aroostook via train Wednesday morning from three depots, Fort Kent, Caribou and Houlton. The Spud County contingent will go to Camp Devens, Mass. Sixteen Presque Isle young men were among the 59 draftees from Board Two. The next draft call from this district, Board Two, is scheduled for March 19 requiring 18 draftees.
Ski tournament — The Northern Ski Club of Caribou staged its annual International Ski Race Tournament on the Quoggy Joe Mountain Trail. This ski assembly was inaugurated three years previously and had grown to especial importance in the estimation of northern Maine and New Brunswick ski contenders.
50 Years Ago – March 17, 1966
YMCA leadership — Four PIHS students and one from Washburn were among 36 delegates to the State YMCA’s Youth Leadership Workshop in Wiscasset. As leaders in the Northeast District YMCA’s program for youth, Sue Gartley, Darris Brewer, Jack Hedrich and Michael Soucier were accompanied by Shelby Cockey of Washburn and five other Aroostook delegates.
PIHS juniors declamation — Tuesday, March 29, is the date set for the annual junior declamations presented by the juniors of PIHS. A variety of speeches on topics both humorous and serious will be delivered. The event will take place in the high school auditorium. Admission will be 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.
25 Years Ago – March 13, 1991
Desert Storm soldiers receive County homecoming — More than 500 Loring Air Force troops, deployed servicemen and women, some of them gone since last August, returned home from the Persian Gulf War Sunday to an appreciative crowd of well over 1,000.
Telethon features County talent — The United Way of Aroostook, in conjunction with WAGM TV, scheduled its eighth annual telethon, to be broadcast live. The telethon traditionally served as the final event of the annual United Way of Aroostook’s fund-raising campaign. The goal for this year’s event was set at $10,000.
