Shire musicians light up the stage

HOULTON, Maine — The stage of the Houlton Community Arts Center featured performances from up and coming musicians Thursday as part of the school’s “Night of Jazz” event.

Featuring musical numbers from the Houlton Middle School Jazz Band, High School Jazz Band and High School Show Choir, the evening gave community members a glimpse of the instrumental and vocal talents that can be found at the high school.

Members of the Middle School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Hutchinson, performed three numbers, “25 or 6 to 4,” by the group Chicago, “Mood Indigo” and “Kansas City.” Band members include Mayan Pratt, Emily Preston, Maddie Grant, Nolan Jacobs, Laci Cummings, Zoe Austin, Grace Violette, Robert Pelton, Hope Chernesky, Nate Delucca and Sydney Peabody.

The High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Kevin Mania, performed the tunes “On Green Dolphin Street,” “My Funny Valentine” and “What is Hip.” Band members include Mitchell Bragan, Dylan Johnston, Rothery Sullivan, Sam Astle, Connor Grant, Justin Queen, Sierra Rhoda and Victoria Holmes.

The High School Show Choir, under the guidance of Jason Anderson, sang songs from Billy Joel as part of their performance routine. The Show Choir will compete in the State Vocal Jazz Festival at Stearns High School on Saturday, April 2, at 2:30 p.m.

The choir includes, Sam Astle, Lexi Bartlett, Adam Casillas, June Choi, Breezy Clossey, Jade Clossey, Victoria Codrey, Chloe Davis, Cassidy Esposito, Claire Gilpatrick, Carolyn Hannigan, Lauren Hogan, Victoria Holmes, Dylan Johnston, Cassidy May, Jillian Moran, Morgan Nelson, Amber Ouellette, Taylor Reed, Sierra Rhoda, John Thatcher, Kyleigh Tyler, Davan Thornton, Rhetta Vega, Olivia White and Kelsey Sewall.
