Author shares farming heritage

WASHBURN NEWS

On Thursday, March 17, 2016, author Lynn Olsen Brown paid a visit to Washburn District Elementary School fourth-graders.

Brown, along with others in the Maine Agri-Women group, have been visiting schools throughout The County, telling students about the “good old days” of farming and potato picking, along with the importance of modern-day farmers.
Brown is the author of the book “Alice, Frankenstein and Saturday Night Baked Beans,” which describes the harvests when she visited her Aunt Irene Bradford at her farm in Patten during the 1950s and ’60s.
Brown brought along many items from those farm days, including a potato basket, and old trunk, Thermos, lunchbox and, of course, a potato barrel. She read an excerpt from her book to the students, and also gave them tips on writing a book.
The students were interested and curious about the stories Brown had to tell and the artifacts she brought in to display. Many thanks go to Halina Herzog, who heads the 21st Century After School Program in Washburn, for planning and funding this great experience for our students.
