FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The dates for this year’s 30th “Tiger” Basketball Camp have been set and are June 20-24 for the boys and June 27-July 1, 2016 for the girls.
The camp, under the direction of Larry Gardner, who is the girls’ varsity basketball coach at Fort Fairfield High School, is open to youth presently in grades one through eight.
“We are very excited to be able to offer this type of basketball camp and are very fortunate to have outstanding coaches and role models giving their time and knowledge to teach our future stars the game of basketball,” Gardner said.
Gardner said that a skills competition similar to the NBA’s All-Star Skill Challenge will be offered. Players will compete against the clock and each other to perform ball handling, passing and shooting skills.
“This will allow us to test their skill improvement from the beginning of the week to the end of the week,” he said.
The boys and girls camps will be limited to the first 125 applicants and will be held at the high school and elementary school gymnasiums. The camp will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
The camp will include breakfast and lunch each day with each participant also receiving a “Tiger” Basketball Camp T-shirt and camp basketball.
Awards will be presented at a family barbecue held during the final day of camp.
Players will be grouped by age and ability into three divisions, high school, college and NBA/WNBA, and will have eight indoor and outdoor courts available to use. The high school division will use shorter baskets and smaller balls while the college and NBA /WNBA divisions will use regulation baskets and balls.
Each player will have an opportunity to develop his or her basketball skills through drills, games, films and lectures while offering a competitive and fun atmosphere. Each team will play two games a day with all championship competition to be decided on the final day.
“We are very enthused about being able to offer a camp of this type and feel it is a big success in developing these players basketball skills and teaching them the game the right way,” Gardner said, “all while having fun and meeting new players as well.”
