Caron earns WDHS Principal’s Award
WASHBURN, Maine — Noah Caron, a senior at Washburn District High School and son of Leland Caron and Dara Lagassie, has been selected to receive the 2016 Principal’s Award, Principal Ron Ericson announced recently.
The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout his years at WDHS, Caron has distinguished himself in the classroom and as an outstanding athlete and has proven himself a true leader in both areas, Ericson said. Caron has received the Phi Beta Kappa Highest Achievement Award. He was the top student in his class in English I and Honors English III, Spanish I and II, woodworking, American studies I and II, physical science, health, calculus, geometry and algebra II.
“Noah has also earned the honor of achieving the highest GPA each year to date,” the principal said. He has been a National Honor Society member for two years, vice president his senior year, was selected as Student of the Month in both freshman and senior years, was part of the Gifted and Talented Program his sophomore year, was the secretary/treasurer of his class for two years and was also on the yearbook ad sales committee for two years.
“Athletically, Noah has contributed enormously to Washburn District High School. His leadership has been remarkable and he has set the goal high for the younger athletes by showing tremendous sportsmanship and working hard to become the best he could be,” said Ericson.
Caron has participated in four years of basketball and was captain his senior year. He was selected to the McDonald’s C and D All-Star basketball team his senior year. In addition, he was on the baseball team for three years and a captain his junior year; played four years of soccer, served as captain and was selected all-Aroostook in grades 10, 11 and 12; was part of the cross-country team as a freshman and senior, qualifying for state competition and selected for the all-Aroostook team his freshman year; and played on the volleyball team for one year and managed one year due to an injury.
He has been an active participant of the Varsity Club all four years of high school, and served as club president for two years.
The principal added, “Noah has also been active in the community volunteering in our local soup kitchen for the homeless and donating his time as a Special Olympics volunteer for two years. Noah has assisted the instructors of the Beaver Basketball Camp with young campers, and also took part in a large fundraiser called Heidi’s Hope.
“Noah’s community and school are very proud of him and he very much deserves this special recognition,” Ericson said.
Caron, Erickson and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 2. The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler.
McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association. An additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
