Community colleges honor top scholars

    AUGUSTA, Maine Fourteen Maine community college students were named last week to the All-Maine Academic Team for two-year colleges at a ceremony held Wednesday, March 23, 2016, in Augusta.

The event was hosted by the Maine Community College System Board of Trustees.
Two students from Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle were among those receiving the all-Maine Acdademic nod, which included a $500 scholarship.
Crystal Condo of Presque Isle is enrolled in NMCC’s health information management program.
Condo volunteers her time as an advocate for the homeless and plans to continue her education to become a registered health information administrator.
Amanda Eivers, also of Presque Isle, is enrolled in NMCC’s nursing program.
She previously earned her bachelor’s degree in business and is president of the college’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
She will enter the workforce when she graduates while completing her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
The All-Maine Academic Team is a program of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges. Students are nominated and selected for the team by their college based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service.
The All-Maine Academic Team is co-sponsored by Northeast Trophy, Phi Theta Kappa, and the MCCS.
Others named to the team are: Phillip Dougherty of Milton Township and Savannah Porter of Sumner, students at Central Maine Community College in Auburn; Barbara Lewis and Liz Morgan, both of Bangor, Eastern Maine Community College, Bangor; Natasha Manson of Oakland and Wendy Sincyr of Embden, Kennebec Valley Community College, Fairfield/Hinckley; Emily Cleary of Portland and Autumn Theriault of Gray, Southern Maine Community College, South Portland/Brunswick; Heidi Look of East Machias and Chloe Wiebe of St. Stephen, N.B., Washington County Community College, Calais; and Chelsea Berube of Acton and Nicole Boucher of Lebanon, York County Community College, Wells.
Cleary will also be honored as the Maine Coca-Cola New Century Scholar in recognition of having achieved the highest All-USA Academic Team application score in the state.
Cleary will represent Maine at the American Association of Community Colleges’ annual convention in April, where she will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
