House destroyed in Sherman fire

SHERMAN, Maine — Firefighters from the Sherman Fire Department were still at the scene early Tuesday of a fire that destroyed a single-story dwelling on the Gallison Road.

Firefighters from six departments, including Sherman, Island Falls, Medway, Smyrna, Patten, Stacyville and Oakfield, worked throughout the evening to extinguish the fire that was reported at about 6 p.m. Monday, according to Sherman Fire Chief Todd Hayes.

No one was injured, he said.

As of Tuesday morning, Hayes was not sure yet who owned the home at 313 Gallison Road or whether it was insured. Investigators with the state fire marshal’s office were called to the scene to determine a cause of the blaze.

Sgt. Scott Richardson of the state fire marshal’s office said Tuesday afternoon that he was unable to determine the cause of the fire because of the extent of the damage to the home.

“The owner apparently came home and smelled smoke and saw some around the electrical panel,” said Richardson. “He ran upstairs and was able to escape out a window. All signs point to it being an electrical fire, but we just can’t make that absolute determination.”
