CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted its fourth annual High School-Age Indoor Soccer Tournament on Saturday March 26, 2016. This event has grown to be a great day of soccer for area high school soccer players. The girls’ tournament was played in the morning and included seven teams from around the area — Ashland, Fort Kent, Presque Isle, two teams from Caribou and two from Madawaska.
Round robin play was played to seed teams into the playoff portion of the tournament. Caribou 1 entered the bracket in first place and received a bye. Ashland defeated Madawaska 1, Caribou 2 downed Fort Kent and PI stopped Madawaska 2 in the quarterfinals, with Ashland stopping Caribou 1 and Presque Isle getting past Caribou 2 in the semifinals. PI then went on to defeat Ashland for the championship.
On the boys’ side, 12 teams registered for the afternoon tournament and were split up in two divisions. The first division consisted of Caribou 1, Caribou 2, Huskies, Washburn, PI 1 and Limestone 2, while Division 2 was made up of PI 2, Limestone 1, Ashland 1, Fort Kent, Ashland 2 and Madawaska.
All the Division 1 teams played first in a round-robin format to be seeded into the tourney and the Division 2 teams then played later in the afternoon. In bracket play, the top seeds in Division 1 played the lower seeds in Division 2 and vice-versa.
The four quarterfinal games saw Caribou 1 get past Limestone 1, Fort Kent stopping Presque Isle 1; Presque Isle 2 winning over Washburn and Ashland 1 prevailing over Limestone 2.
In semifinal action, Caribou 1 edged Fort Kent to be the first team to enter the finals, while Presque Isle 2 defeated Ashland 1 to also make it into the championship game. Presque Isle 2 claimed the boys’ tournament title with a victory over Caribou 1.
