Future Business Leaders chapter second in state

The Presque Isle High School Future Business Leaders of America chapter recently competed against 10 schools from Maine at the annual FBLA convention, held March 13-15 in Portland.

The Presque Isle team came home with several medals and placed second overall. Each student took business-related tests and projects were presented to judges.
Students receiving first place were: Rachel Driscoll, accounting 2; Lauren Graves and Shaye McHatten, chapter activity display; Victoria Williamson, client service; Maggie Cyr and Katie Ford, emerging business issues; Patrick Michaud and Cole Staples, entrepreneurship; and Gabriella Donovan and Mari Shaw, global business.
Second-place winners were: Rachel Maxwell, accounting 1; Karen Jones, accounting 2; Cole Staples, agribusiness; Emily Sjoberg, business communications; Leslie Mejia, business financial plan; Emma Beaulieu, Shaye McHatten and Emily Sjoberg, community service project; Alisa Brewer, electronic career portfolio; Karen Jones, help desk; Malerie Buck, impromptu speaking; Sierra Blade and Kylee Mejia, introduction to business presentation; Cole Staples, marketing; and Rachel Driscoll, personal finance.
Winning third-place recognition were: Alisa Brewer, Lauren Graves and Shaye McHatten, business ethics; Ally Bell and Malerie Buck, business plan; Rachel Maxwell, database design and application, job interview; Grant Hemphill, local chapter annual business report; Alisa Brewer, Leslie Mejia and Lydia Patterson, management decision making; Emma Beaulieu, Mari Shaw and Emily Sjoberg, public service announcement; Shaye McHatten, public speaking; Emma Beaulieu and Gabriella Donovan, publication design; Sam Gray and Cole Staples, website design; and Ally Bell and Alyssa Sweeney, scrapbook award of merit.
Maggie Cyr was honored with the New Member of the Year Award, having been nominated by local adviser Kimberly Hemphill.
Also at the convention, Travis Roy, a quadriplegic, delivered an inspirational speech describing his last 21 years since his hockey accident in 1995. Later that evening, hypnotist Bruce James Francisco, hypnotized several FBLA students, which members reported was very entertaining.
Schools represented at the convention were Erskine, Lake Region, Lewiston, Monmouth, Mount Blue, Nokomis, Oakhill, Presque Isle, South Portland, Telstar and Westbrook.
