CARIBOU, Maine — Superintendent Timothy Doak, Chairperson Tanya Sleeper, and board member John Sjostedt recently met with representatives from the town of New Sweden to enter back into a four-year tuition agreement.
“The meeting was somewhat successful,” said Doak, “because they met as a board right after and voted to go with the RSU 39 tuition agreement. They will also have one with Washburn, so now they have two. The agreement will be a better situation for both of us, financially and educationally. We’re very happy to have them on board.”
Sleeper added that the tuition agreement “opens the doors for additional opportunities for class sharing and bussing.”
Sjostedt is optimistic about “changing the conversation to regional transportation.”
“We have the capability to make it happen,” said Doak. “Wayne St. Pierre (RSU 39 facilities director) does an excellent job. I’m always amazed with what they’re doing.”
Doak added that New Sweden requested bus maintenance, and that RSU 39 will have to write up an agreement. “They did ask for bus maintenance, and we will write an agreement for that,” he added.
The board later voted to accept the four-year contract with New Sweden.
