CALAIS, Maine — On Saturday, April 30, 2016, Maine-Wabanaki REACH and Schoodic Riverkeepers are sponsoring a 5K educational road race that retraces ancient steps and offers river views on U.S. Route 1 in Calais.
The route begins at the rest area on Route 1 and ends at the Wabanaki Cultural Center where participants will enjoy an educational speak out, awards ceremony, snacks and coffee. Transportation from the Wabanaki Cultural Center to the start will be available.
Maine rivers have played a critical role in the lives of indigenous people for thousands of years. The waterways of the Schoodic (St. Croix) River have been a traditional source of nutrition for the Passamaquoddy people living along its banks.
They have provided a perfect nursery/spawning ground for millions of sea-run fish. The Schoodic has also been a major artery of traffic for Wabanaki people for over 10,000 years. Water and fish are deeply embedded into Native history, culture, traditional beliefs, rituals and spirituality.
The Passamaquoddy people of the region are diligently working with partners, friends, and allies to reverse the damage done to the environment, and restore ancestral waters and the indigenous sea-run fishery of their ancestral river.
