Caribou man accused of eluding police at 120 mph
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A 25-year-old Caribou man is facing a number of charges after allegedly fleeing from police in a car chase that reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
Zachery Scott has been charged with a felony count of eluding police in a vehicle, along with criminal speeding, operating after a suspension and violating conditions of a release for a prior operating under the influence charge, according to Presque Isle police Officer Lucas Hafford.
Hafford said Thursday that at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday he recorded Scott driving 71 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone on Parsons Road on the northeast side of Presque Isle. Hafford said he pursued Scott, who was heading northeast in a green 2000 Saab.
Scott didn’t stop and reached speeds of 120 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone, Hafford said. The officer stopped the chase “for safety reasons” near the Mapleton townline and alerted other area authorities.
Police from Washburn soon found Scott, who voluntarily pulled over and admitted to fleeing. Hafford said he then took custody of Scott, who is being held without bail in Caribou awaiting trial next month.
The whole incident lasted about 15 minutes, Hafford said. “The lucky thing about it is there was no traffic.”
