HOULTON, Maine — It isn’t every day you see a horse galloping down a hallway or a mountainside perched on a wall, but then again it’s not every day Greater Houlton Christian Academy has an art show either.

Those pictures and more were on display April 12 when the school held its first-ever art show, featuring more than 100 works of art by students from preschool through grade six. The show was held in conjunction with the school’s annual spring open house.

“We have been delighted to have Bonnie Tidd, an experienced art teacher, working with our students,” said Head of School Tom Zimmerman. “She’s been teaching them different techniques and working on different projects, and the response from the students and teachers has been great.”

The show featured everything from watercolor paintings to monograms, illustrated books and more.

Sadie Thompson, a fifth-grader at the school, made a paper mache sculpture for her art project. And even though paper mache was something she’d never tried before, she said she enjoyed the chance to make art with her class.

Tidd echoed those positive feelings, saying she loved fostering a new batch of artists.

“What a joy to work with all these young people at GHCA. They’re so receptive to learning about art and … [I love seeing their] creative minds spinning with ideas,” she said. “I also want to give a big thank you to the wonderful staff for allowing me so much freedom in working with their students and for helping me.”

Even though art was definitely the star of the show, the night was also about giving visitors a chance to tour the School Street academy. Student ambassadors greeted company, ready to answer questions and show off their school. Other students had recent projects on display.

“We love seeing our hallways filled with parents and other visitors who’ve come to see what GHCA is all about,” said Zimmerman.
