HOULTON, Maine — For the second straight year, Houlton High School welcomed 19 new members to its chapter of the National Honors Society during the annual induction ceremony and academic awards evening.

Held Tuesday, April 12 at the high school auditorium, the evening marked the culmination of one academic goal for the 19 inductees.
“These students have not only achieved a 90 or better average, but have also demonstrated leadership, service and good character,” said NHS Vice President June Choi in her opening remarks.

The 2016 inductees include Madeline Blanchette, Isaiah Brown, Chloe Davis, Sarah Delano, Hannah Foley, Owen Gallop, Jessica Hemingway, Victoria Holmes, Brooke Howland, Amber Ivey, Hannah Jacobs, Dylan Johnston, Tessa McCormack, Kate Newman, Emma Peterson, Evelyn Pratt, Elizabeth Ward, Rylee Warman and Olivia White.

Reviewing the four pillars of the National Honor Society were seniors Choi, Casillas, Bartlett and Gentle.

“Scholarship means a commitment to learning,” Choi said. “A student is willing to spend hours in reading and studying, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn when formal education has ended for education only ends with the end of life.”

Bartlett discussed the role of service.

“Service can be described in various ways,” she said. “In the routine of the day’s work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or recognition is a quality we seek in our membership.”

In discussing leadership, Gentle stated, “Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school. In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train and aid others to obtain that same objective. The price of leadership is sacrifice.”

Discussing character, Casillas stated “Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others. It gives each one individuality without which no one can respect oneself or hope to obtain the respect of others. It is this force which guides one through life.”

The current members of NHS include Aaron Sewell, Adam Casillas, Amira Abouleish, Cameron Clark, Chelsea Gentle, Connor Grant, Erika Fitzpatrick, Choi, Katie Condon, Lexi Bartlett, Megan Collett, Morgan Nelson, Natalie Hill, Olivia Winslow, Rachelle Provost, Ryan Dee and Sam Astle.

Led by Astle, the incoming class then recited Houlton’s NHS pledge, “I pledge myself always to seek the light of truth. To hold scholarly habits; to engage in worthy service; and to lead forward in all things that shall advance the welfare of the school.”

The evening concluded with Houlton High School Principal Marty Bouchard announcing the Prinicipal’s Honor Awards recipients.
