A NEW AUTOMOBILE — FREE — “Bud” London, left, of London Motors turns over the keys to the 1966 Comet, a custom sports coupe, that will be given away by the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion, during the annual Fourth of July celebration in Houlton. Ready to trade the keys for a check is Tom Ewing, standing center, general chairman of the celebration, while sitting behind the wheel of the cardinal red car is Bob Fauk, vice commander of the Legion, and a member of the celebration committee, Program chairman Allie Holden looks on at the right. The new fully-equipped Comet, valued at just over $2,550, will be given away as a gate prize to someone who buys an admission ticket for the celebration events. The car is on display at London Motors.

100 Years Ago – April 19, 1916

 Jeffersonian Club — Over 100 members of the local Jeffersonian club gathered at Sincock’s Hall Friday evening to commemorate the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, the founder of the Democrat party. A smoke talk was presided over by Aaron A. Putnam, the president of the club followed by refreshments were the feature of the evening. Maurice I. Ingraham, a Houlton boy has been chosen as one of the 12 contestants for the Hallowell Prize Speaking at Colby.

  75 Years Ago – April 17, 1941

 Winner — Fortune smiled today upon Mrs. J.A. Moore, Houlton, when it was announced here that she was one of the 500 lucky winners of a $25 United States Government Savings Bond awarded in the sixth and final week’s sensational $100,000 Super Suds Slogan contest sponsored by the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company.

 Honored — Ricker was proud to learn recently that Edward J. Henderson of East Hodgdon had been elected to Tau Beta Pi, the honorary engineering fraternity at the University of Maine. He was an honor student in the Ricker Classical Institute Class of 1938 and also in the engineering department of the Junior College in 1938-39. He is son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Henderson of East Hodgdon.

50 Years Ago – April 21 , 1966

 New store — Houlton’s newest store will open its doors to the public next Wednesday morning. The new Sears Catalog Sales Store is located next to the C&G Foodliner on North Street, and will officially open to the public after the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning.

 Breakfast — Mrs. Phyllis Nelder, left, and Mrs. Mansfield London display some of the attractive May baskets that will be filled with fudge and sold during the annual May Breakfast. The breakfast is being sponsored by the Aroostook General Hospital Free Bed and Aid Association, and will be served Saturday.

25 Years Ago – April 17, 1991

 Birthday — Roy Thomas turned 98 last week and had some friends help him celebrate the special occasion. Members of the Elm Tree Diner that were in attendance were Brenda Bell, Molly Bailey, Dolores Farrell, Cindy Shaw, Jennifer Bell, Kim Player and Courtney Tilley. Mr. Thomas has returned recently after visiting with his daughter in Florida.

 Letters — Students in grade one at Houlton Elementary School recently sent get-well notes to First Lady Barbara Bush when she was recovering from a leg injury suffered during a fall. The students are taught by Karen Donato. Joshua Lenentine wrote, “I hop htat your lag gits budr.” From Heather Doody, “I hop you git beddr.” The students received an autographed 8- by 10-inch photo of The First Lady with some children and her pet dog in the photo.
