Bridge over troubled waters

To the editor:

It’s early dawn. I’ve walked to the bridge on the outskirts of town.

Standing at the rail looking down at the rushing water, the current carries it swiftly downstream. To where?

I ponder and think it’s like life. Each day I awake to face the unknown. I pray to God for guidance and direction to take me through the circumstances that may come my way.

I ask Him, “Do you hear me Lord?” “Are you listening?” There have been times when I didn’t think you were. Oh Lord, I need you! Bend down your ear and hear my plea. Don’t let me doubt what your Word says in Deuteronomy 38:1 “I am with you always. I will never leave you or forsake you.” Oh Lord let my faith be strong in believing that verse.

I passed the cemetery on my way Lord. Many names on the tombstones were familiar. All lay silent beneath the earth awaiting the second coming of you Lord. What a day that will be when you shout your arrival to the world!

I look at the trees that line the banks of the river. Their naked limbs reaching out to receive new life of the spring season. From their roots the sap flows upward to warm the limbs and to cover them with a fresh crop of leaves.

Yes, even in nature Lord, you bring new life. They thirst for your nourishment just as I do. As we all do.

To the east, the sun is rising over the horizon in all its brilliance. Without a sound or word revealing your craftsmanship to the world and to me personally.

In the chill of the morning, I look down again at the water cold and foreboding and remember Lord you stating in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trials and sorrows, but do not be dismayed, I have overcome the world.”

Oh Lord, thank you for your Word. It gives me hope and stability.

As I cross to the other side of the bridge, I am encouraged Lord, that as you care for nature, you will care for me, for my sisters and for my brothers in Christ.

You are the bridge that will carry each of us across the troubled waters of life. You are our safety net and we are trusting you.

I’m looking up Lord. My heart is enlighten. I can pray with confidence. You have taken the fear and remorse from my heart. Once again its rhythm is in tune with your strength and loving kindness.

Thank you Lord for this walk with you this morning. Let me remember you are always there with your love, your mercy, your understanding.

Though the night brings darkness and uncertainties, morning light brings a new day, a new beginning.
