Well, another very quiet week here in Island Falls. We got a couple of days of very heavy rain and that has taken off most of the snow now. Only a few patches here and there to remind us of what we did have.
I have seen a few robins around lately and the mourning doves were out early this morning looking for their breakfast. I rushed out to toss a few sunflower seeds here and there and just hope it didn’t attract the pesky red squirrels. I have a pair of them that really seem to be just waiting for me to fill up the feeders so they can come and crawl into them and eat everything in sight.
I have lots of female finch, chickadees and nuthatches that just hover around looking for a chance to get some sunflower seeds if, and when, the squirrels get done. I haven’t seen the cardinals for a few days and hope that they are still with me.
And this is just a little reminder to support your library. Houlton’s Shop ’N Save will donate $1 to the Katahdin Public Library for every blue carry bag bought at their store; thus, buying a blue carry bag will help to reduce the use of plastic and also help the upkeep of our library. This offer is good through the month of April, so on your next trip to the Shiretown this month remember the blue bag deal.
I still have many deer coming to my backyard to graze now that the snow is all but gone. I had three of them one morning lately that were way down back where there must have been new growth, as they stayed there quite a while eating. Then, next time I looked, they had decided it was nap time: all were lying down and there they all stayed for about an hour. Then they all arose, ate some more and wandered off into the woods for the day.
They always show up again late in the afternoon and continue to find something edible, especially near the woods.
