Leland Lowery

Orono & LIBERTY, NY — Leland F. Lowery, a retired Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, entered into eternal rest on March 29, 2016. He was 88. The son of the late Merle F. and Gertrude C. (Fletcher) Lowery, he now joins his loving wife, Nydda B. Lowery, who passed away in 2012 after 62 years of marriage, and his son-in-law, Keith T. Hamlin.

Leland was a graduate of Higgins Classical Institute and Colby College (1951). He served our country in the U.S. Navy 1945-47 as a radio operator stationed in Guam. He became a Maine State Trooper and later entered the FBI in 1955 as a Special Agent. He worked out of the New York City office for 22 years, the last 10 years of that time as Senior Resident Agent at Monticello, New York. He transferred to the Bangor FBI office, where after 25 years of service, he retired from the bureau. Not content to be idle, he opened a Private Investigative firm for several years.

Leland was a pillar of the community no matter where he lived and believed that actions speak louder than words. And act he did! In Liberty, NY, he joined the BPOE #1545 Lodge in 1967 and was elected Exalted Ruler in 1972. He was a lifetime member of that organization. He belonged to the Fall Brook Hunting Club in Claryville, NY, where he was designated unofficial newspaper delivery man for the other clubs on the road. He volunteered for 10 years at the Liberty Fire Department JC Young Hose Co.#1.

After moving from Liberty to Orono, Maine he joined the Kiwanis, where he was a member for over 35 years, holding the office of President and administering many other duties, including supervising at the annual auction. The University of Maine honored him by inducting him into the “M Club” for ushering at the sporting events. He was a member of the George F. Hisson Fellowship, a part of the Kiwanis International. He was a 50 year member of the Mason AF &M. The later years as part of the Mechanics Lodge of Orono. He was a member of Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor, where he was active in the Provost Guard. He was a member of the 32 degree of the Valleys of Bangor and Portland Scottish Rites since 1981. He loved to play poker at the American Legion, where he was also a member in good standing. One of his joys was meeting for breakfast at the famous Pat’s Pizza with his buddies of the “Geritol Gang.” The Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono, was also a recipient of Leland’s volunteerism. He served as Head Usher and Trustee in charge of properties.

Leland is survived by his five children: Steven (Tammy) Lowery of High Rolls, NM, Susan Hamlin of Liberty, NY, Michael Lowery (Kathy) of Delmar, NY, Kenneth Lowery of Monticello, and Christine (Roscoe) Perham of Greenfield, MA. He had eight grandchildren: Ian (Katie) Lowery, David (Vanessa) Hamlin, Colleen (Christopher) DeCiel, Erik (Jennifer) Lowery, Kurt Lowery, and Maxwell, Thomas, and Helen Perham; great-grandchildren include: Kayden and Brenna Hamlin, Christopher DeCiel Jr., Hannah Lightfoot, and Penelope and Paisley Lowery.

He is also survived by a brother, Carlton (Loretta) Lowery of Florida and brothers-in-law, Richard Barker, and Elwood Barker both of Maine, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Dirigo Pines of Orono for all their love and care over the past three years. You were part of our extended family and we appreciate all you did for Leland.

A memorial service will be held on April 30, 2016, at 1:00 p.m., at the Church of Universal Fellowship, Main Street, Orono, Maine.
