Limestone schools learn about anonymous threat

LIMESTONE, Maine — An anonymous threat targeting Limestone Community School and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics resulted in no incidents at either school last week.

Parents of LCS and MSSM students had received a letter warning of an anonymous threat made via social media app Yik Yak. While the letter did not describe details of the threat, it did state that the anonymous post threatened of something happening on Friday, April 15, 2016.

According to Limestone Community School Principal Susan White, one parent and one student contacted her regarding threatening posts on the site.

“One post allegedly named LCS and one allegedly did not say anything specific about any school, including LCS,” White responded. “No one from the school saw the posts as they no longer existed on the site.”

White immediately contacted Limestone Police Chief Stacey Mahan and reported what she was told, which sparked an investigation.

Since the initial threat on April 12, the Limestone police have not seen any additional posts on Yik Yak involving LCS or area schools.

Staff took extra safety precautions and were monitoring the front doors during student arrival, and had also practiced lockdown procedures with students. The Limestone Police Department was also present on April 15 to ensure the safety of staff and students.

“We have worked closely with MSSM administration to coordinate additional safety measures that will be in place tomorrow,” wrote White last Thursday. “A letter was sent to all parents/guardians of LCS and MSSM students making them aware of the situation, what has been done up to this point, and what will be in place when school starts tomorrow morning and through the day.”

MSSM Executive Director Luke Shorty stated at the end of the day Friday that nothing amiss occurred at either his school or LCS.
