WOODLAND, Maine — Caribou Police Department started receiving complaints about counterfeit bills from multiple businesses last Wednesday. According to a police report, counterfeit $20, $50, and $100 dollar bills were being used in businesses from Caribou to Bangor.
The police report goes on to state that one business reported that the individuals responsible for passing the bills were still in the store. When police arrived at the scene, Woodland residents Joshua Brydon, 29, and Shelly Butler, 34 were determined to be responsible for allegedly using the counterfeit currency.
Both were charged with aggravated forgery. Brydon was also charged with violation of conditional release, and sent to Aroostook County Jail. He will be held without bail pending his August 4 arraignment.
Butler was released on $10,000 secured bail.
Officer Keith Ouellette is the primary investigator for the case, with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service office in Portland.
Caribou Police Sergeant Mark Gahagan encourages any businesses who receive suspicious bills to immediately report them to the police.
