PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Studio 923 Art Club will host its first Trash to Fashion Show on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2016.
The show, to be held at 7 p.m. in Wieden Auditorium, will feature the fashion design skills of students and community members in a runway show. All creations are made exclusively from recycled materials. The public is welcome; there is a suggested $5 ticket price.
Studio 923 is hosting this unique fashion show in order to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and caring for the earth. Students and community members have worked during the past two months to gather recycled materials and create fun pieces that truly embrace the beauty of taking care of the earth, student organizer Emma Ruff said.
Ruff, a fine arts major, said, “We are really looking forward to showcasing the creativity of our designers. They have truly taken on this challenge with diverse artistic perspectives. The materials are incredibly fun — VHS film, movie ticket stubs, plastic bags, reels of film and so much more.
“We are encouraging the community to come out and celebrate the beauty of the Earth by taking a look at ways we can reuse and recycle everyday items.”
Organizers hope this inaugural launch of a fashion showcase will become a yearly celebration of student and community talent.
