PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On Wednesday, May 4, 2016, the Presque Isle Historical Society will offer a special tour of the 1875 Vera Estey House Museum.
In celebration of what would be Estey’s 122nd birthday, the society will host a champagne and candlelight tour of the small, two-story Victorian-era house, beginning at 7 p.m. The guided tour will discuss the beginnings of Presque Isle, the history of the house, and its unique resident.
Visitors will see the house much as its original inhabitants did — by candlelight. Light hors d’oeuvres and champagne or sparkling juice will be served.
Tickets are $10 per person and space is limited. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 762-1151, leaving your name, phone number, and number of tickets desired. Tour participants must be 21 years of age or older. ID may be required.
Kim Smith, secretary/treasurer of the society’s board of directors, said, “There is something for everyone to see in the house, with fascinating items from the Civil War era, John R Braden, our Teddy Roosevelt artifacts and a new exhibit on Dr. Storer Boone. We have one of the most beautiful hair wreaths I have seen and some items that are very unusual.
“In addition, Vera’s story and her fashion sense are quite extraordinary, from her famed hats to her fascination with unique textiles,” Smith added. “To say more would give it all away. You’ll just need to come see for yourself.”
The historical society’s regular tour season begins in earnest this month with monthly guided walking tours of historic downtown Presque Isle, city-wide narrated history tours aboard Molly the Trolley, and guided tours of the Estey House and the historic Fairmount Cemetery.
The Presque Isle Historical Society is a non-profit organization established in 1963 to study, promote and preserve the history, culture, heritage and physical artifacts of Presque Isle for present and future generations.
