‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society
Thinking about volunteering at an animal shelter? Great! Animal shelters welcome individuals to stop by to socialize with animals, whether it be playing with the cats or taking the dogs for a brisk walk.
Some individuals or groups like to collect items that are needed at the shelter, and finally, others collect financial contributions as a fundraising project. Many like to attend some of the fundraising events to show their support for the animals. Volunteerism is provided in many forms.
Individuals can request to volunteer at the Central Aroostook Humane Society by contacting Director Betsy Hallett. She is the “go to” person who can let people know what is needed at the shelter and on what days volunteers would be welcomed.
One way to volunteer is to take the dogs for a brisk walk to burn some of their pent-up energy.
Taking them for a walk is a great way to develop better dog training techniques and handling skills. It’s also a fantastic way to get some exercise while helping a dog in need at the same time. There are even quiet-time tasks; volunteers can spend time with pets that just need to be petted or brushed, which can help to comfort a shelter dog in an otherwise stressful environment, with the added benefit of boosting your mood too.
Another is to spend time with the cats by playing with them and/or to sit with them and pet them. This provides them with social interaction with humans.
Another way to volunteer is to participate in one of the Central Aroostook Humane Society’s many fundraising events.
As always, please consider making room in your heart and home for one of the animals available at the Central Aroostook Humane Society’s animal shelter. There are many cats and dogs that need loving homes.
Visit the shelter at 26 Cross Street in Presque Isle to adopt the forever pet that is right for you. Their hours are: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed from 12-12:30 p.m.).
