Varsity Club makes snack delivery
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — As part of a competition during winter carnival, Presque Isle High School students collected snacks for two weeks to deliver to elementary students at Pine Street Elementary School. The winning class would received 50 points and the senior class won with bringing in over 300 snacks. In total PIHS faculty, staff and students donated over 700 individual snacks to the school.
The Presque Isle High School Varsity Club went to deliver these snacks on March 30, 2016. The club members then broke up into smaller groups to read with the afternoon kindergarten students. Many Varsity Club members went back to their former teachers.
Varsity Club members read many books to the kindergarten students and some of the Kindergarten students even helped by reading some pages to members of the high school club. It was a great experience for all members.
“The Varsity Club kids loved going back to their old school and seeing some familiar faces and the elementary students loved seeing some of the athletes they get to see when they go to local sporting events,” said Varsity Club advisor Laura Hunter. “All students, both young and old, asked when we would be able to do it again … I would say it was a great success.”
Hunter said the Varsity Club partnered with the United Way of Aroostook, which is directed by Sherry Locke, for this event.
“[Sherry] was approached by Pine Street and she reached out to me since we had such a successful toy drive at Christmas,” Hunter added.
The Varsity Club is comprised of over 40 members and is always looking for ways to give back to the local community. For more information on partnering with PIHS the Varsity Club, contact Hunter at 764-0121 or hunterl@sad1.org
