1991: Cutbacks force DHS office to move to Caribou from PI

115 Years Ago — 

April 24, 1901

     First ball — The first ballgame of the season in Caribou will occur next Saturday afternoon between the Caribou and Fort Fairfield high school nines.

     Maple sugar galore — Frank Theriault has been making about 2,500 pounds of maple sugar and syrup at his camp and expects to have a good portion of that done at the latter part of this week.

100 Years Ago — 

April 27, 1916

     Automobile show attendees — Among those from Caribou who attended the automobile show in Bangor this week were E.G. Farrell, John H. Farrell, E.J. Briggs and M.L. Hutchinson.

     Spring fever — Some early oats have been planted, basketball game tomorrow night, and the clean-up, slick-up campaign is on to revitalize our beautiful little village.

75 Years Ago —

April 24, 1941

     Airport project authorized — A $620,000 Caribou airport project was recently authorized by the state Work Progress Administration administrator. The work is expected to start in a few days and will include completion of an east-west runway and construction of north-south runways. It is expected that a considerable portion of the project will be handled primarily through the use of machinery with only the surplus man labor being used.

     Honoring G.M. Carter — Approximately one hundred teachers and school officials of the Caribou-Limestone district and guests, honored General George M. Carter, former superintendent of that district, at a dinner served Monday evening at the Caribou High School.

50 Years Ago – 

April 27, 1966

     Writing city charter — The drafting of a city charter for Caribou is under way, according to Charles Hatch, town manager, who is tackling the complicated problem upon instructions from Town Council. The council was authorized during the town meeting this year to petition the Legislature for a change in the charter. It is hoped that Caribou will gain city status within a year.

     Rewarded — A New England Telephone Company lineman has been awarded the Bell System’s highest award. Lee D. Belote, 28, Colby Siding, saved the life of a fellow worker on Nov. 3, 1965 and will receive the Vail Medal award, established in 1920 by Theodore N. Vail. On Nov. 3, Belote and his partner were working as a two-man line crew when Belote saw his partner’s body in a slumped position suspended from the telephone pole by a safety belt. He ran 100 feet to a nearby schoolhouse and asked a teacher to call an ambulance

April 24, 1991

     DHS office to move from P.I. to Caribou — Final funding cutbacks in the state service have led officials with the Department of Human Services to give 60 days’ notice terminating their lease at a local facility, built especially for the state last year. Regional Supervisor Bob Glidden explained that 630 clients served from Presque Isle throughout the county will be transferred to the Caribou location.

     Caribou Rec hosts pet show — More than 200 kids, dogs, cats, stuffed animals and parents attended the fifth annual Kids Pet Show held at the Caribou Recreation Center on Saturday. The show is offered to give each child the opportunity to show off their dog or cat. There’s also a special category for stuffed animals, allowing every child the opportunity to participate.
