HOULTON, Maine — The Aroostook County Action Program will officially open its new consolidated service center and early care and education center on 91 Military St. Wednesday with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The event begins at 4 p.m., with the ribbon-cutting taking place at 5:30 p.m. Tours of the facility will be available and the community is encouraged to come see the building.
The Houlton center employs about 30 staff members and serves thousands of residents throughout the entire southern Aroostook region.
With the opening, it marks the first time in ACAP’s history in Houlton that all of its programs will be under one roof including early education, workforce development, energy/heating assistance and WIC (supplemental nutrition for women, infants and children).
The new center provides Early Head Start, Head Start and Child Care services to up to 85 children up to age five each day. Nearly 40 percent of the children served are identified with mild to moderate special needs. In addition, 85-90 percent of the children live in poverty.
