Four charged as Caribou police step up patrols

     CARIBOU, Maine — With police cracking down on impaired driving, four people were charged here over a three day span with operating under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

     Eric Gagnon, 31 of Newburyport, Massachusetts, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the Caribou Police Department.

     Rene Vaillaincourt, 46, of Woodland was charged with driving drunk at 12:38 a.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016.

     Brian Hale, 35, of Caribou and Jeffrey McGrath, 56 of Presque Isle each were charged with operating under the influence of drugs. Hale was stopped at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, and McGrath at 12:03 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2016.

     The news release from Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan stressed that one of the officers involved, Chad Cochran, recently completed drug recognition training and is now able to conduct evaluations of suspects who may be driving under the influence of drugs.

     Caribou police have been cracking down on impaired driving and will be doing extra patrols throughout the summer as part of a Maine Bureau of Highway Safety Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign, Gahagan said.
