Winter sports awards presented at Washburn HS

     Washburn District High School held its winter sports awards night March 29, 2016 at the Washburn District High School Gymnasium.

     After Athletic Director Ron Ericson welcomed the parents and student/athletes, Mike Hartford presented certificates to members of the JV boys’ basketball team. Receiving certificates were Keenan Jordan, Gary Hewitt, Tyler Jardine, Nicholas Irving, Keith McGraw, Quintin Thompson, Noah White, Carver Pendexter, Zakkary Tracy, Dillon Phillbrook, Jovanni Taveres and manager Owen James.  

     The Coach’s Award went to Tracy and the Most Improved Player Award was presented to Jordan.

     Jon Poisson presented certificates to JV girls’ basketball team members. Receiving certificates were Jessica Aube, Julia Dahlgren, Samantha Churchill, Sydney Chavez, Makenzie Vaughn, Kathryn Easler, Macey Barker, Mollie Clark, Samantha Campbell, Mariah Davis, Kristen Sarmiento, and manager Hannah Dow.

     The Most Valuable Player Award went to Vaughn, the Coach’s Award was presented to Chavez and Kathryn Easler was named Most Improved Player.

     First-year coach Deborah Whittier presented pins and certificates to girls’ volleyball team members.  Receiving awards were Kelsey Farr, Brittney Corey, Macey Barker, Brooklyn Plummer, Grace Braley, Kassandra Farley, Kristen Sarmiento, Makenzie Vaughn, Mollie Clark, Jillian Mandeville and manager Jessica Aube.

     The Most Improved Player Award was presented to Barker and the Coach’s Award was presented to Plummer.  Braley was presented with the Most Valuable Player Award and was recognized for being named to the County tournament’s all-star  team.

     Ben Goodwin presented awards to the Div. II boys’ Aroostook County volleyball champions.  Receiving awards were Parker Thompson, McCall Turner, Jarrett Olson, Noah Caron, Tyler Jardine, Bryce Roix, Nicholas Irving, Justin Davis, Noah Caron, and Jovanni Taveres.

     Turner was named the Most Valuable Player, was named to the All-Tournament Team and was also the Most Valuable Player. Thompson was named an all-tourney player as well. Davis was named Outstanding Defensive Digger and Noah Caron was named the Coach’s Award winner.

     First-year coach Caitlyn Roix presented awards to the cheering squad. Receiving letters were Jillian Mandeville and Rachel Thurston. Receiving pins were Elizabeth White, Abigail Conroy, Kelsey Farr, Samantha White and Brooklyn Plummer. Earning a Three-Year Letter Award was Farr and Coach’s Awards went to Plummer, Elizabeth White and Farr. 

     Coach Diana Trams and assistant coaches Scott Olson, Andy Churchill and Jon Poisson presented awards to the varsity girls’ basketball team members. Receiving certificates were managers Julia Dahlgren and Sydney Chavez and player Alexi Carney.  Pins went to Laina Mette, Kassandra Farley, Kristen Sarmiento, Makenzie Vaughn, Jessica Aube, Mariah Davis, Taylor Howe, Emilia Churchill, Brittney Corey, Grace Braley, Kathryn Easler and managers Hannah Dow and Owen James. Howe was presented a Three-Year Letter Award.

     Braley, Mette and Churchill were honored for being named All-Aroostook. Mette was named the Defensive Player of the Year, Grace Braley received the Coach’s Award and Emmy Churchill as named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

     Coach Randy Norsworthy and assistant coach Mike Hartford presented awards to members of the varsity boys’ basketball team. Earning varsity letters were Nick Irving and Gary Hewitt.  Receiving pins were Tyler Jardine, Kevin Jordan, Brandon Cropley, Derek Baker, Keenan Jordan, McCall Turner, Jarrett Olson, Caleb Thompson, Parker Thompson, Noah Caron and scorekeeper Mariah Campbell and manager Owen James. Receiving a certificate was Quintin Thompson. Turner earned a Three-Year Letter Award. Olson was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, Caron received the Coach’s Award and Turner was named the Most Improved Player.  Caron and Olson also received recognition for being named All-Aroostook.

    Ericson presented varsity letter jackets to Olson, Mette and Sarmiento. Olson also was given a plaque and placard for the gym wall to commemorate his 1,000 career points. A duplicate of the plaque will go in the school’s trophy case.

     Norsworthy announced his retirement and Ericson thanked him for his service and presented him with a lifetime pass to WDHS basketball games and a plaque to recognize his contributions.
