PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On April 21, 2016, students in Caribou’s Maine College Transitions program spent the day participating in a college awareness experience at both Northern Maine Community College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Maine College Transitions assists adults who are working toward enrolling in a post-secondary institution to gain the skills they need to succeed.
At NMCC, students were led on a tour of the campus by Andre Anderson, assistant director of admissions. They viewed the fitness facility, classrooms, library and labs, and learned about services available to them such as tutoring and the use of assistive technologies, including Livescribe pens. They had the opportunity to talk to instructors in both the nursing program as well as the automotive technology lab.
At UMPI, students enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria and then were led on a tour of campus by Sam, a first-year biology student. Students visited the Center for Innovative Learning and learned about tutoring services, as well as Wieden Hall and Gentile Hall, where they learned about the school’s athletic programs. Students were able to see classrooms and the art studio and then sat down with the director of admissions, Erin Benson, to ask questions.
Jennifer (no last name given), a participant in the College Transitions program, thought the tours of both campuses were very informative. “I liked how we could ask questions and if they didn’t know, they could find out for us. I also really liked the cooking at UMPI.”
Shawn (no last name given), another program participant, thought the tours were excellent. “They can help develop people for their career. They had great food! I learned they have fitness and swimming which is important to me, as well as the tutoring services to help you so you don’t feel alone and can accomplish your goals. They also have different student organizations you can join so you can get out and be a part of a group.”
