With the exception of Monday’s rainy weather, it has been a drier than usual spring for local baseball teams, allowing for a number of games to be played. And the local squads have responded nicely, putting together several impressive outings over the past week.
Houlton (4-0) sits atop the Class C North region, while in Class D North, Hodgdon (4-1) is seventh, Southern Aroostook (1-2) is 12th and East Grand (0-3) and Katahdin (0-3) are tied for for 14th.
Monday’s rainy weather forced the postponement of Southern Aroostook at Hodgdon.
Mattanawcook 3 Houlton 8 — At Houlton Monday, playing in a rain-soaked game, the Shires took a 2-0 lead in bottom of first inning and never looked back en route to their fourth win of the season.
Thomas Prescott, Ryan Dee and Nick Botting each had two hits for Houlton, while Gunner Maxwell had three hits for Mattanawcook Academy.
Houlton’s Cameron Graham pitched the win, striking out four.
Fort Fairfield 11, East Grand/GHCA 2 — At Danforth Monday, the visiting Tigers were victorious. Individual results were not reported by presstime.
Houlton 1, Shead 0 — At Eastport Saturday, Ryan Dee allowed just three hits and struck out 12 to lead the Shiretowners past the Tigers. Billy Phillips singled and drove in Nick Botting for the game’s only run and Botting singled twice.
Matt Harris, Ryan Eylar and Noah Curtis each singled for Shead (4-1).
Ashland 1, Hodgdon 11 — At Hodgdon Friday, Dillan Buzzell earned the win on the mound and helped his cause by contributing a single, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and scored a run. Also for the Hawks, Matt Tuttle had two singles, reached on a walk and scored two runs.
Ashland was led by Kyle Beaulier who reached base safely and scored a run. Tim Tarr added a hit for the Hornets.
Wisdom 12, East Grand/GHCA 9 — At Danforth Friday, the visiting Pioneers won 12-9. Individual game results were not reported.
Katahdin 8, Hodgdon 18 — At Hodgdon Thursday, Jordyn Merritt doubled, had three singles and a walk, while scoring four runs and driving in three to propel the Hawks to victory.
Wyatt Foster earned the win on the mound and helped his cause by reaching base safely five times. He scored three runs and had two RBI’s.
For Katahdin, Rigoberto Otero reached base three times, stole two bases and scored twice. Brody Guiggey had an RBI-triple, a single, and scored a run.
Fort Fairfield 8, Southern Aroostook 1 — At Dyer Brook Thursday, Fort Fairfield held Southern Aroostook to just one run with a strong defensive performance for the win. The Tigers were led offensively by Ryan Player with a triple and a single. Carter Bruce added a single with and two RBIs for 2-0 Fort Fairfield.
For the Warriors, Nate Lilley tripled and singled, Josh Perrin doubled and Cory Rockwell added two singles.
Houlton 11, Caribou 8 — At Caribou April 27, Prescott had a stellar day as he had three hits, drove in five runs and stole two bases for the Shires. Dee and Phillips each had two hits and two RBIs. Zack Hagan added two hits and scored three runs.
Graham pitched the win, allowing two hits, in four innings of work. Pat Howe went three innings and allowed two hits and struck out four.
Only two of Caribou’s runs were earned.
Houlton coach Jim Castner said Houlton led by as much as 8-0 after three innings, but Caribou rallied and had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Southern Aroostook 10, Woodland 5 — At Woodland April 27, Perrin threw 6 and a third innings, giving up one earned run and striking out eight to lead the Warriors. Lilley doubled, singled and scored three times for SACS, while Tyler Batchelder had a double and 2 RBIs and Hunter Lawlor provided a double and an RBI.
For Woodland (0-4), Dylan Leighton had two singles with two RBIs and Justin Monk doubled and scored twice.
Washburn 12 Hodgdon 6 — At Hodgdon April 26, Noah Caron paced the Beavers by reaching base safely four times and scoring three runs. McCall Turner singled, tripled, and walked while scoring two runs.
For Hodgdon, Merritt doubled, singled, walked and scored two runs.
East Grand/GHCA 2, Shead 12 — At Eastport April 26, Matt Harris recorded three singles as Shead beat East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Steve Morrison, Noah Curtis and Isaac Curtis each chipped in with three singles for the Tigers (3-0).
Jim Schurman, Thomas Gilman and Isaac Potter each singled for East Grand (0-1) with Schurman driving in a run.
