PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls played their only home games of the season Saturday, falling in both ends of a softball doubleheader to the Husson University Eagles by scores of 3-0 and 12-2.
The Owls finished the regular season with a 25-13 record. They are currently ranked fourth in the USCAA national poll and await Thursday’s selection show to determine their postseason fate.
In Saturday’s first game, held at the Presque Isle High School softball field, Husson’s Sami Cyr belted a two-run home run in the first inning and teammate Alannah Healy threw a seven-hit shutout, striking out seven along the way, as the visitors prevailed.
Sara Packard pitched well UMPI, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. She struck out six and did not allow a walk.
Hannah Williams went 3 for 4 to pace the Owls at the plate. Packard added a pair of hits.
In game two, Packard blasted a two-run homer in the third inning, but it was the only offense UMPI could muster in the lopsided loss called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Lyndsay Merrill and Aimee Ball hit homers for Husson.
Dalynn Jacobs had two hits for UMPI in the loss. Packard once again handled the pitching duties for the Owls.
