Tennis squads see first court action

The Houlton boys and girls tennis teams saw their first court action of the season last Tuesday, as the Shires traveled to Caribou to take on the perennial powerhouse Vikings. Houlton followed up with a tough home match against undefeated Mattanawcook Academy.

Both the boys and girls squads played competitively, but were overmatched in shutout losses. The following is a recap of those matches.

Mattanawcook 5, Houlton girls 0 — At Houlton Saturday, the Lynx improved to 5-0 on the season, while handing Houlton its second loss. The individual results, with MA players listed first were: in singles, Ali Hardy beat Becca Mooers, 8-2; Ava Broderick defeated Piper Flewelling, 8-3; and Natalie Tilton bested June Choi, 8-3.

In doubles, Abby Morrison and Paige Hesseltine beat Lauren Hogan and Morgan Nelson, 8-1; and Sidney Morrison and Katey Libby defeated Carrie Hannigan and Nadja Messerschmidt, 8-0.

Caribou 5, Houlton girls 0 — At Caribou April 26, the Vikings shutout visiting Houlton. The individual results, with Caribou players listed first, were: in singles, Gabrielle Marquis defeated Mooers, 8-0; Conner Spencer, beat Flewelling, 8-2; and Ashley Matlock bested Choi, 8-0.

In doubles: Ciara Richards and Danielle Hanson defeated Hogan and Nelson, 8-4; and Hailey Holmquist and Kyra Thibeault beat Tessa McCormick and Hannigan, 8-1.

Mattanawcook Academy 5, Houlton boys 0 — At Houlton Saturday, the visiting Lynx of Lincoln shut out Houlton. The individuals results, with MA players listed first, were: in singles, Tyson Libby defeated Isaiah Littleton, 8-1; Allen Dorn beat Owen Gallop, 8-1; and Jeff Garfield bested Devin Ivey, 8-0.

In doubles, Tyler Tolman and Davey Susan beat Sam Astle and Timothy Youngfellow, 8-1; and Nate Merritt and John Farrington defeated Justin Hogan and Brandon Smith, 8-0.

Caribou 5, Houlton boys 0 — At Caribou, April 2, the Vikings improved to 3-0 on the season, beating Houlton in the Shires’ opener. The individual results, with Caribou players listed first, were: in singles, Alec Cyr defeated Littleton, 8-1; Ethan Plourde beat Gallop, 8-0; and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr bested Ivey, 8-0.

In doubles, Austin Scott and Gabriel Rand beat Youngfellow and Hogan, 8-0; and Austin Cheplic and Bailey Griffeth won by forfeit.
